"Flowering Wounds"

The Sketches

First...
Began by doing sketch studies and practices of what I wanted the final product to look like. Experimenting with different styles of robots until settling for the final design (bottom right corner). For a good AP Art sustained investigation, sketchbook pages are crucial for showing your thought process and showing the judges your investigative process related to both your theme and medium.

The Process

Then...
My process began by laying a washed background of my medium of choice for this piece: gouache. This was my first time ever using gouache, so I went in blindly not knowing the "correct" way to use it. During my creation process, I realized that there is no "right" way to use a certain art supply, as it is up for the artist's creativity to determine how to utilize the material's quality.I began with a sketch of my focal point, keeping in mind composition with the rule of thirds. I used the gouache with a thicker consistency, as if using acrylics that blended with water.

The Final Product

At Last...
After finishing this piece, a spark inside me lit as I enjoyed using gouache as a medium. My following pieces reflected a similar pattern as I wanted to test different ways of using the material. Regarding my theme, at the time when this was created my theme revolved around the conflict of life and death, showing how life can come out of death and in the darkness light can always be found. With the visual of a disassembled robot that has growth around it resting on a gravestone, I wanted to convey a mood that reflected a feeling of healing after someone has passed on.
